Where to eat delicious pancakes in Tokyo

Right now, pancakes (パ ン ケ ー キ) or hot cakes (ホ ッ ト ケ ー キ) are very popular in Tokyo. So much, that all the trendy shops are concentrated in the famous Harajuku and Ometesando districts ! Time’s out Tokyo had made a rather tasty list in 2013, but when this autumn the Tokyo Walker guide special pancake got published, I started making the rounds of the best cafes in Tokyo. The choice was agonizing, but I chose three addresses at affordable prices.

1 The very French Café Accueil Ebisu / 恵 比 寿 カ フ ェ ア ク イ ー ユ

My favorite is definitely the last where I went, coffee Accueil near Ebisu station. Inspired by French cuisine, it offers an interesting menu of quiches, sandwiches and salads, as well as French desserts. Its specialty ? The 20 cm diameter pancakes. Yes, you read me well. Fortunately, it is possible to choose the size and quantity: two half size pancakes, 2 normal size pancakes or even 4 for hungry stomachs ! If desired, you can select an already prepared recipe (pancake with chocolate cookie, pancake with banana and whipped cream …) or you can opt for a set type and add the ingredients for an extra charge. Considering the monstrous size of the plate, the price – less than 1000 yen, is really not expensive (note: I did not get hungry during the 15 hours that followed, and I could not finish my plate).

2 The popular Egg’n’Things / Eggs’ n Things 原宿 店

Sometimes you have to be patient to eat in the Egg’n’Things  Harajuku. This  Hawaiian style chain is booming, and it is not uncommon to queue for over an hour hoping to taste its delicious pancakes. The best point of this cafe is to provide sweet and salty pancakes, as nothing is better than an omelet with pancakes … Again, the dish is inexpensive in terms of quantity. When I ordered my plate of banana pancakes with whipped cream, I did not expect to have 6 pancakes accompanied by a mountain of cream for a little over 1000 yen. The chain is popular and has several addresses, including Yokohama.

3 Lunchtime at JS Pancake Cafe / 青山, 長野, 横 浜 …

It is also a chain, but having tested Yohohama and Nagano, the quality was the same, in a very nice decoration somewhat like a French bistro. The pancake menu is less diverse, but the lunch set is really interesting, offering to choose two hot dishes, with two pancakes and a salad. I am really their fan You may also need to wait for a table as it is very popular to come to lunch at J.S. cafe. I had the opportunity to taste a recipe of the season: the « Mont blanc » pancake. With delicious taste of chestnut cream, I could not finish it !
